Issue #17

As I'm sure you all know, Rock of Pages is loosely based on my own life. Now that I'm getting toward the end here, I'm more concerned with making decisions that serve the story rather than simply trying to be autobiographical. So a couple characters featured in this issue are fictional amalgamations that have been inspired by several different people and reformed into something new. If you know me in real life and see someone you think you recognize, it may not mean anything at all. Comic books are only as real as you want them to be. 

So just sit back and enjoy. I'm working on a special 2012 convention exclusive right now, then it's the penultimate chapter of Fred Lactus.

It's certainly an exciting time now as I'm approaching the final act of the series. I've been experimenting a lot with the art and the standard structure of comic book form. The stuff that I've come up with has been satisfying for me and hopefully you guys can dig it too. So stay tuned, dear reader! 

Also, big thanks to everyone who made it out to the Cincinnati Comic Expo this weekend. There were a bunch of people with great stuff and everyone I talked to had an awesome time. My bro Nate and I will definitely be back next year.

Cincinnati Comix Expo

That's right, fans, on Saturday, September 17, I will be exhibiting at the Cincinnati Comix Expo! I'll be there with plenty of copies of Rock of Pages: Volume 1, some full color 11x17 prints, plus I'll be doing sketches all day. If anyone is interested in buying a sketch and you know what you'd like, please email me. I have time now to get some done so you can just pick them up at the show. Since I'll be drawing in the comfort of my own studio, I'll also be able to show them a little more love than I will at the convention.

Exposition Ahoy!

The Sad Skater has returned! Check out The Saga of Fred Lactus Chapter 4 here. And while you're at it, you should probably catch up on the story so far by going through everything here.

This issue is a milestone for a couple of reasons. First, weighing in at 30 pages, it's the longest issue thus far. And i'm usually happiest with the most recent one I finish, so there's that. But also it means I'm now more than halfway done with Fred's Saga. It's definitely a weird feeling to now be approaching the final act of my time-traveling epic. Don't think I'm winding down though. In a lot of ways I'm still just getting warmed up. There's plenty of crazy surprises still to come.

Chapter 5 will be issue #18. Check back next for more Xopher-centric adventures.

Issue #14

Okay, confession time: As a teenager, I used to write some dreadful poetry. I'm sure that comes as quite a surprise, given the literary masterpieces you see on display here. Anyway, I rediscovered a poem I wrote about my 20th birthday; essentially a statement on the time when adolescence gives way to adulthood, looking back and looking forward, blah, blah, etc. So it felt like a good time to check back in with my birthday reflections as I reached my 25th year. And what better way to do that than with our heroic narrator who happens to look just like me! 

In the spirit of full disclosure, I've got another confession, my friends: I've had two additional birthday's since the idea for this issue arose. The comic takes place in a sort of fictional universe based on my life, so it may as well be set in the past of said universe. It's an unfortunate part of growing older that every birthday is met less with excitement and more with trepidation and unfulfillment. Now at 27, I'm honestly not sure if I can justify my existence anymore than I could at 25. But I suppose the point is that time will tell. 

On a related note, it's possible that Cartoon Lee was just imagining his encounters with previous versions of himself. Or maybe some kind of temporal distortion takes place in the future that causes shockwaves to reverberate throughout time. Fred Lactus is next issue.
